What does it mean when the runes don’t speak?
You’ve drawn a rune. You look at it. You wait.
Nothing happens.
You draw another. A third. One more, because maybe that’s the one.
Still silence.
And then the thought comes: am I doing something wrong? Do I not know how? Do the runes not want to answer me?
This is a very common experience. And it doesn’t mean something is broken.
A Rune Is Not an Answer Machine
The first thing worth making clear: runes don’t give ready-made answers.
They don’t say “do this” or “don’t do that.” They are not a prediction device that outputs decisions. They are a mirror — a tool that helps surface what is already inside you: a state, a feeling, a question, a pattern.
If nothing looks back at you from the mirror, there are two possibilities: either there is nothing to see, or you are not present.

Silence and Confusion Are Not the Same Thing
This is an important distinction worth paying attention to.
Silence is calm. It is empty in the sense of space — but not empty in a bad way. There is no noise. There is no “mind” working hard.
Confusion is noisy. It is the state where the mind starts quickly searching for meanings, matching runes together, reading things in that may not be there — because silence is uncomfortable and the void wants to be filled.
When silence feels frightening, it is usually a sign that we are used to a constant stream of answers. We have been trained to fill voids quickly — with news, with other people’s opinions, with analysis. Silence feels passive, like a failure.
But silence can also be completely calm. Calm. And that is an entirely different experience.
Why Do Runes Sometimes Go Silent?
There are no certain answers here. And that is actually fitting — because if I gave you a list of “5 reasons a rune goes silent,” I would be doing exactly what silent runes don’t do.
But some directions worth noticing:
The one asking is not present. Hands move, runes touch the table — but you yourself are somewhere else in your mind. Work, worry, routine. The body is with the runes; the mind is not.
The question is not real. Sometimes a person asks something they already know the answer to. Or asks something they are afraid to ask for real. A rune does not answer the surface — it answers the real question.
Confirmation is being sought, not an answer. If the decision has already been made but a blessing is being sought — the rune often won’t give it. It is not a mirror that says “you are the fairest of them all.”
The answer is not yet ready. Sometimes a situation is still forming. The fabric of fate — wyrd has not yet woven itself to that point. The time is not yet right.
Everything is fine and there is nothing to ask. This is perhaps the quietest silence of all. The rune says, in its own way: “What question? Everything is already well.”
What to Do When No Answer Comes?
The first instinct is to draw another rune. And another. Until something “right” comes.
This is understandable. But in doing so, we fill the void with the mind — not with presence.
Try this instead:
Stop. Don’t draw another rune right away. Place your hands on the table, breathe once, slowly.
Ask yourself:
- Am I present right now?
- Is this truly my question?
- Am I looking for an answer or for confirmation?
- Am I afraid of what the answer might be?
Write down what happened. Not what the rune “said” — but what happened inside you. What did you feel? What did you notice? From what place were you asking?
Sometimes that noticing is worth more than any rune.
A Journal for Silence

Today no answer came. I noticed I wanted to draw more runes right away. In my body there was… The real question might be… I leave this open for now.
This is work in itself. Silence is not failure — it is an invitation to notice what is happening before you begin searching for an answer.
Silence as Protection
A rune does not always have to answer.
Sometimes silence is a way of protecting not only the question, but the one asking it.
Not because the answer is frightening — but because you are not yet in the place where you could hear it. Or the question is not yet what it truly is. Or everything is actually fine and there is simply nothing to answer.
Silence is not standing before a wall. It can be a doorway — if you receive it quietly.
