Isa, Freezing, and the Slow Return to Movement
There are moments when nothing in life moves.
Not because we don’t want it to.
Not because we are lazy or lack willpower.
But because the body remembers that movement once wasn’t safe.
Freezing is not the absence of life.
Ice preserves, it keeps us alive.
When the nervous system senses that every change could bring harm, stillness becomes a shield. Time halts. Energy locks down. Attention withdraws or becomes blurred.
When nothing moves, stillness keeps you alive.
Living in the Energy of Isa
In the language of the runes, when frozen, you live in the energy of Isa.
Isa is ice.
Silent. Preserving. Still.
Not dramatic or violent, but held in protective suspension.
Living in the state of Isa may feel like this:
• Waiting for something outside of you to change
• Wanting to act but being unable to
• Feeling heaviness, numbness, or quiet depression
• Time blurs – days or months disappear into each other
Often, Isa is accompanied by the energy of Nauthiz — inner pressure and need.
The sense that something should happen, but the resources aren’t there.
And with this, Perthro often moves in.
Perthro speaks of the shadow.
Something that influences you, but is not yet seen.
Something is present, something is at work within or around you, but you cannot see it.
The Ice Must Not Be Broken
This is a crucial point.
You don’t need to push through the freeze.
It doesn’t yield to force, motivation, or hurry.
You won’t reach life by breaking the ice.
The ice must melt.
And melting begins not with action, but with recognition.
Warmtn Without Burning: Kenaz
Ice needs warmth to melt.
But too much heat will break it.
Here enters Kano — not as fire, but as awareness.
Kano is not passion or intensity here.
It is the quiet light of noticing.
“I see what is happening to me.”
“I am here.”
Too much awareness too fast can flood the system.
But a small flame brings enough warmth for movement to gently begin again.
Holding Space: Berkana
Melting needs safety.
As the body begins to soften, Berkana steps forward — the rune of holding, growth, and support.
Here, your conscious, adult self begins to hold your frozen inner child.
Not to push them forward, but simply to be present.
Berkana says:
“You are not alone in this change.”
This is not self-improvement.
This is staying with yourself.
The Body Knows First
The path out of freezing does not begin in the mind.
It begins in the body.
Very quietly, calmly.
You don’t ask your body to move.
You allow it to feel that movement is possible.
Start small and soft:
• Wiggle your toes
• Move your fingers
• Feel the soles of your feet touch the ground
Nothing more is needed.
This is Raido in its smallest form — not a journey, but the restoration of the possibility of movement.
Slow Movement Back Into Life
When awareness (Kano), micro-movement (Raido), and holding (Berkana) begin to work together, something shifts.
Not suddenly.
Not explosively.
But steadily.
The nervous system begins to trust again that movement does not equal danger.
And then, transformation can begin.
What May Come: Dagaz and Eihwaz
At some point, the freeze has done its work.
Not through breaking, but through fulfillment.
Freezing transforms into rest.
Isa is a state where time stops so life can hold itself.
Not an end, but a space for renewal.
Here, Dagaz marks a new phase — not a leap, but a natural turning.
A new day that arises not from force, but from alignment.
Eihwaz brings presence.
The ability to stay with yourself even in the midst of change.
This is not escaping the freeze.
This is integration.
Stillness becomes a choice, not a prison.
Movement becomes a possibility, not a demand.
A Quiet Ending
If you recognize yourself in the state of freezing, know this:
Your system did not fail you.
It protected you.
You do not need to rush.
You do not need to fix anything.
When nothing moved, stillness kept you alive.
And now, life may begin to move again — slowly, gently.
