In the beginning, there was nothing that could be named. There was no land and no sky, no light and no darkness.
There was only Ginnungagap — a deep and silent gap, a space between two forces that had not yet met.
This is where the world is born.
On one side of this gap lay the fire-realm of Muspelheim. It was warm, moving, and restless. Fire carried within it life-force and the desire to grow. This was Fehu — the primal warmth of life, the spark that longs to move and multiply.
On the other side lay the eternal ice of Niflheim. The ice was silent, clear, and strong. It held form and boundaries. This was Uruz — primordial power, raw and mighty, giving life its body and endurance.
From the conflict between fire and ice, everything that exists came into being. Warmth melted the surface of the ice, and ice cooled the fire. From their meeting rose mist — the first breath.
The first living being to be created was Audhumla, the great and calm cosmic cow. Audhumla carried the power of Uruz, but in a gentle and nourishing form. Her milk flowed endlessly, sustaining life at a time when the world was still searching for its shape. Audhumla did not rule or conquer. Like the energies of Fehu and Uruz together, she was a nourishing being.
From the same primal substance was also born Ymir, the first giant. He carried power without limits. He grew and multiplied, and from him arose the giants — wild and unstructured forces. This is the power of Thurisaz — the rune of giants, the rune of chaos and raw potential.
Neither good nor evil, but too vast to remain in balance.
Audhumla slowly licked the ice, and from within the ice emerged a new being — the first ancestor of the Æsir. From him were born the Æsir, the gods who brought something new into the world. They were not only force; they were consciousness. Their rune was Ansuz — word, thought, and breath. With the Æsir, conscious guidance entered creation.
When the Æsir looked upon Ymir and the growing giants, they understood that the world could not remain only expanding and wild.
They killed Ymir and shaped the world from his body.
From his flesh came the land, from his bones the mountains, from his blood the seas and rivers, and from his skull the sky.
Thus Midgard was born — an ordered world in which life could begin to live.
When the world was created, it still stood motionless. Then the Æsir set the sun and the moon into motion. They separated day from night and set the rhythm of time flowing. This was Raido — journey, movement, and cosmic order. The world was no longer frozen; it began to move.
The sun and the moon shone in the sky like torches. Their light revealed the forms of the world and ignited knowledge. This was Kenaz — fire that illuminates. Through the act of creation, the gods came to know the world. Here the Vanir also appeared, and with them deeper, embodied wisdom. Magic and knowledge found their place in the story of creation.
When Midgard and Asgard were complete, creation reached a new level.
The Æsir found two trees on the shore. They did not cut them down, but gave them life. One received breath, another consciousness, a third warmth and form. Thus the first humans were born — Ask and Embla. This is Gebo — the rune of giving and receiving.
Human life was born as a gift, not as possession.
And then came a time when everything was in balance. Humans lived in Midgard, the gods in Asgard. No one feared, no one desired too much. Gold was not money or power, but simply beauty. The gods played with gold as children play with sand. This was Wunjo — the rune of joy, peace, and fulfillment.
In mythology, this time is called the Golden Age. Nothing harmful had yet been born.
